Houseplants are the best – Sketchbook Peek 24

Happy Sunday!  I haven’t done much drawing this week because I’m still getting back to reality after 5 lovely days at Just So Festival. I’m catching up on lots of admin, emailing and planning for two upcoming projects.

The first is developing some prints for the 20:20 Print exchange which I am taking part in this year! The second is sorting out my studio and filling it with things for Cheshire Open Studios on the 13th and 14th of September.

My studio is full of houseplants at the moment (I think I’m slightly obsessed) I now have a grand total of eight houseplants! I thought I’d use Sketchbook Sunday as an excuse to get up close and personal with the Flaming Katy I bought myself as a studio warming gift.

A surface pattern designers sketchbook – Sketchbook Peek 20

It’s week 20 of Sketchbook Sunday, a crazy amount of blog posts! I’ve shared all sorts of creative things on Sketchbook Sundays. You can take a look at the archive here.

This week I’ve actually been working in my sketchbook, creating paintings to work in to digital patterns. Today I filmed and edited my very first sketchbook video! So now you can feel like you’re having a real flick through my sketchbook.

Train Doodles – Sketchbook Peek 16

I’m back with a few little commuting sketches from the week. I’ve been pretty lax on the drawing recently so I’ve  decided to attempt to draw everyday for a while. I don’t want to give myself an end date I’m just gunna go with the flow, you know.

Expressive Geometric – Sketchbook Peek 15

There’s lots of research a foot in The Hay Jay OH studio so my Drawing has slowed down a lot over the past couple of weeks.

I’m attempting to manage research and creating. Do you have any tips?

On Friday I split my day between idea gathering and business research in the morning and painting in the afternoon, which actually worked pretty well. I  just put on The Lion King Musical soundtrack on repeat  and created.

Quick Collages – Sketchbook Peek 13

I’m in a bit of a drawing rut at the moment, I’m not feeling very inspired. I think I need to go on a drawing trip. I’ve been making collages whilst on trains, it’s fun to have a time limit and only a couple of materials. I had 15 minutes on the train into Liverpool city centre, a copy of The Skinny, scissors and masking tape.

Drawing Perfect Circles – Sketchbook Peek 12

So my plan to blog everyday in May didn’t go very well!…oops

I’m drawing circles a lot at the moment , apparently drawing perfect circles is a sign of madness.

Heres a couple of pieces that I’ve created this week. A doodle and a mixed media piece for a project I’m working on with Hazlehurst Studios

Spiky Green Cactus Friend – Sketchbook Peek 10

Anyone who follows me on Pinterest will have noticed my love of greenery recently, see below.

So I bought a new cactus the other day

I couldn’t resist drawing the contrasting shapes that make the cactus. I used a few different techniques, a continuous line drawing, a shaded Biro sketch and some watercolour experimentation with my new water brush!

Sketchbook Peek 8

Happy Sunday!

This week I bought a new sketchbook after some feedback, which I may elaborate on in a future post. I decided to work bigger so I bought a giant A2 mixed media sketchbook.

Bigger is better!

I’ve used all kinds of different sketchbook sizes throughout my art life, this year I have managed to work my way down to a tiny  A5 book out of ease of use and accessibility I suppose.

In my sketchbook this week…

  • Some floral studies of some pretty flowers I found whilst walking
  • Some rabbits because I was feeling easter-y. (I really like the Mexican masked ones I may draw some more of those

At the minute I’m collating inspiration for a new project. My top priority is creating something to enter in the Halton open art exhibition the deadline is the 23rd so I’ve got about a week to either repurpose something or create a new piece I’m not sure what to enter yet, leave me some suggestions if you like?!

Sketchbook Peek 6

I’ve almost finished my floral project, which I’ve aptly titled “Darkly Dreaming Florals” in homage to Dexter (I love a little cultural reference).  I’m  now starting to pull together a geometric project, so I thought I’d share something a bit different, my development sketchbook.

I generally have two sketchbooks running along side each other for each project, one purely for sketching & the other for theme experimentation, ideas and digital development

At the moment the projects called “Slightly-African-textiles-inspired-geometrics“, not too catchy.

Feel free to chime in if you can think of an awesome project name

I also did an interview with the wonderful Charlotte Rose about my creative process this week go check it out!

Sketchbook Peek 5

Good morning, Happy Sunday!

I’ve had a bit of a flat week and haven’t gotten too much drawing done so I’ve added a couple of images from sketchbooks that are half filled and floating about my bedroom. It’s really fun to look back at your old sketchbooks to inspire yourself and see how much your style has changed.  My drawing style has changed this year, but it still feels like me (cheeese).

Hayley_Holden_sketchbok-HAYJAYOH1

I bought a water brush this week, I don’t know how I’ve never used one before, they are just amazing.

My pops picked some daffodils & I couldn’t resist adding a little springtime to my sketchbook

Hayley_Holden_sketchbok-HAYJAYOH1

You may not realise this, but I really hated drawing flowers 6 months ago. Heres some floral drawings I did around November 2012

Hayley_Holden_sketchbok-HAYJAYOH1

I’ve been inspired by geometrics recently, here’s a lino print I made back in January at a print workshop (read about the workshop here if you missed it). I’m thinking of creating a digital version.

Hayley_Holden_sketchbok-HAYJAYOH1

I’ve completely  forgotten I  made this. It’s the early stages of a layout of a pattern I was creating. I love photocopying.

Sundays happens once a week, so does #SketcbookSunday.

I’d love to see your sketchbooks get involved on Twitter or Instagram with #SketchbookSunday remember to tweet them at me at @HayJayOh or @HeroHales

I’ve developed print designs this week and I’m still trying to think of a cute way to show same-y development pieces into Sketchbook Peek (watch this space)

So print development  means it’s been a pretty digital week creatively, but Sketchbook Peek has spurred me to keep up the  drawing habit. I’m still working on a floral theme so there’s some of that  below and a quick train observation sketch page

I had some exciting news this week that I’ll be revealing soon so keep an eye out across my social networks!

Anyway, I know Daire over at Open Way Designs is joining in with #SketchbookSunday today. I’d love to see your sketchbooks, tweet your images to @Hayjayoh so I can see them and remember to tag #SketchbookSunday

Book Illustration: Dracula

I finished reading Dracula in January  but don’t worry, I’m not going to attempt to write a review. Instead, I stuck to my strengths and created an illustration.

A fact that I find completely mental is that Dracula is  a one hit wonder the author, Bram Stoker, didn’t have much success with anything previously but old Vlad has become such an iconic figure! Probably says something Jungian about our collective unconscious?

I know you guys like  behind the scenes shots. Heres a page out of my sketchbook I actually really enjoy the composition of this page. I post stuff like this all the time on Instagram feel free to follow me :)

Hayley Holden – Dracula in progress

Not to spoil the book, but there is one scene in particular that was very vivid to me. Lucy is put to bed with a garland of wild garlic flowers around her to protect her from the vampire, inspired by this I put together this little illustration

Have you read Dracula? I would love to hear your insights on the story, especially about Mina, a strong female character in the social context of the time?

Quick post today, I thought I’d give you guys some more behind the scenes imagery. I’ve had a busy week,  I started a new job and went on a belated birthday trip to London to see Pixar in concert, which was amazing might I add!

Here are some drawings from this week, there’s a few nudey drawings in the mix because my friend Amy and I decided to go to a life drawing session on Wednesday

I’ve thought about this post all week and I think the pressure of wanting to write this post has spurred me to  actually drawn more which is obviously great so perhaps this will become a regular feature?

Do blog ideas & posts make you more productive? What do you guys think?

30 day celebration!

I’ve hit the first milestone in my 365sketch challenge I am quite excited about this I’ve never gotten very far with a 365 challenge. So far I’ve kept this challenge separate from my main online presence as it is more of a learning and practice experience. I have been updating a devoted blog which by default has been feed into my Masterblog (the point of my Masterblog after all)

Fotor1106231425

What do you think?
Do you prefer keeping projects separate or uploading everything you do into one blog?
As you might have noticed it is something I ponder about a lot.

At the beginning of this challenge I wanted to practice drawing realistic faces. I have found I am still drawing in the same style as I was before but I am more comfortable with drawing faces now even though my drawings aren’t as life like or as pretty as I would like them to be.

Fotor1106225339

Initially I thought about drawing faces for the whole of the 365challenge but now I am thinking about changing my subject after 30 days to keep the challenge fresh?

I guess it is about weighing up how much my drawing would develop just drawing one subject for 365 days and how much it would develop drawing a range of things? I don’t think my faces have developed that much over the past 30 days so I am going to carry with them for the next 30 days or until I am happy.  Decisions, decisions!
